Blackberries and mange tout harvest

August is prime harvest time. The salad crops like lettuce and spinach need to be picked regularly otherwise with the rising heat, they will normally bolt and start flowering. Some of my lettuce has already started doing this. I’ll pick the decent leaves and get rid of the rest of the plant into the compost bin.

Mange tout gets picked and we have it stir-fried with noodles and other vegetables like chard or pak choi. Our mange tout plants succumbed to powdery mildew this year due to the hot and wet weather we have been having but nevertheless there was a good crop of flat pea pods.

French beans, I love growing two different colours as it adds colour. The yellow is very radiant in the vegetable garden and on the plate.

The lettuce has be amazing this year, I actually grew a romaine lettuce, I normally only get leaves. The amount of rain we have had from the sky this year has certainly made a difference to the growing of leafy vegetables.
