Weather in September 24: Very Mild with temperatures approx 20 degrees centigrade for the first few weeks, with thunderstorms and rain in the third week. Temperatures taking a tumble in the last week of Sept to 15 degrees centigrade daytime and 5 degrees at night. Some of the UK got an early frost.

  • Spring Cabbage ‘April’ seedlings, sown 6th September.
  • Chive plants overwintering.

Raised Bed 1 – Squash

The tomatoes have been cleared and the squash is getting larger. Raised Bed now ready for Shallots or Garlic.

This raised bed was empty waiting for soil replenishment and winter brassicas.

Sweetcorn plants have been harvested and cleared, soil replenished and the winter brassicas planted.

Parsnips better wider, Leeks are now ready to harvest.

Weekend 7 – 8 September 24

  • 🌽 Sweetcorn ‘Goldcrest F1’ HARVEST
  • 🍈 Mini Melon ‘Minnesota Midget’ Final HARVEST
  • 🌶️ Sweet Pepper ‘Napia’ Final HARVEST
  • Sweet Pepper ‘Tangerine Dream’ Final HARVEST
  • 🍅 Tomatoes ‘Orange Cherry’ HARVEST
  • 🥔 Christmas Potatoes ‘Red Duke’ leaves just coming through, topped up to the top of the pots with compost.
  • Spring Cabbage ‘April’ seeds sown in pots in the greenhouse.

Weekend 14 – 15 September 24

  • 🥕 Carrot ‘Yellowbunchsowed in my daughter’s Veg Patch.

Weekend 21 – 22 September 24

  • PREP – Raised Bed 2 and 3 Soil preparation, digger over due to compaction and replenishment of nutrients by adding 2 bags of peat free compost.
  • 🐛 PEST – Caterpillar removal from cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and kale plug plants in the greenhouse.
  • PLANT OUT – Plant out Cauliflower ‘All Year Round’, Kale ‘Cavolo Nero’ and Brussels sprouts ‘Evesham Special’ plants grown on for 3 weeks. ! Important – Check for caterpillars before planting under netting.
  • Squash ‘Jester F1’ – second squash growing larger and getting characteristic markings in squash. The baby squash has stopped growing unfortunately.
  • Brussels Sprouts ‘ – bigger sprouts forming.

Weekend 28 – 29 September 24

  • 🍅 Tomatoes cleared from Raised Bed 1.
