August 2024 Weather
Daylight Hours in August in UK: 14 Hours.
August has definitely been the month for harvesting.
It hasn’t been especially hot, mostly maintaining 21 to 24 degrees centigrade with a few hotter days, one day hit 32 degrees C.
We also didn’t have any rainfall for a whole month and then some torrential downpours. However the soil is still very dry.
Growing in the Greenhouse in August
- Sweet Peppers (2 different varieties) some in pots, some in Autopots,
- Tomatoes ‘Cherrola F1’ in the Hozelock Growbag Waterer,
- Mini Melons ‘Minnesota Midget’ in Autopots,
- Mini Cucumbers (last Harvest was 4 August).
- Winter Plug Plants in Pots of Cauliflower’All Year Round’, Kale ‘Cavelero Nero’ and Brussels Sprouts ‘Evesham’.
Raised Bed 1 – Tomatoes & Squash
Raised Bed 2 – Was: Ball Courgettes, Onions & Chives.
Now: Empty Bed ready for Winter Brassicas
Raised Bed 3 – Sweetcorn, Sunflowers and Pumpkins (no pumpkins).
Raised Bed 4 – Onions (harvested), Parsnip & Leeks

Weekend 3 – 4 August 24
- 🧅 Massive Onions ‘Hercules F1’ – HARVEST! Added to drying rack in the shed.
- Brussels Sprouts ‘Medio Enane de la Halle’ – Sprouts forming,
- 🐛 PEST – Caterpillars from the Cabbage White Butterfly picked off Brussels Sprouts plant daily.
- 🧄 Spring Garlic ‘Garcua’ (soft neck) – HARVEST!
- Last 🥒Cucumber ‘Piccolino F1 Mini’ – HARVEST!
Weekend 10 – 11 August
- 🥕 Carrot ‘Marion F1’ – HARVEST! Peeled & Chopped Raw & frozen.
- Ball Courgette ‘Summer Holiday F1’ Last – HARVEST! Hollowed out and roasted with beef, tomatoes & Rice, see my recipe here.
- 🌶️ Sweet Pepper ‘Napia’ red – HARVEST!
- BlackBerry ‘Loch Ness’ thornless – HARVEST!
- Sweet Pepper ‘Tangerine Dream’ – HARVEST! 🎉
- 🍅 Tomato ‘Cherrola F1’ – HARVEST!
- Tomato ‘Orange Cherry’ – HARVEST!
- SEED SAVING – Chives Seeds and Calendula Flowers.
Weekend 17 – 18 August
- 🧅 Onions ‘Hercules F1’ – HARVEST! Added to drying rack in the shed.
- 🍅 Tomatoes ‘Tom Thumb’ – HARVEST!
- 🦠 DISEASE – Ball Courgette ‘Summer Holiday F1’ plants had to be pulled out of the ground as they died due to Powdery Mildew.
- CHIVES – Cut down and planted into pots to clear Bed 3 for winter vegetables.
- 🥬 Received Winter Plug Plants via post – Cauliflower ‘All Year Round’, Kale ‘Cavalero Nero’ and Brussels Sprouts ‘Evesham’. Potted them into 9cm diameter pots to brown on in the greenhouse.
Weekend 24 – 25 August
- 🥔 Potatoes ‘Red Duke of York’ tubers planted in 3 x 30L containers for Xmas Potatoes.
- 🌽 Sweetcorn ‘Goldcrest F1’ cobs are fattening up, not ready yet.
- 🍅 Tomato ‘Cherrola F1’ – HARVEST!
- Tomato ‘Orange Cherry’ – HARVEST!
- Courgette ‘Zephyr’ x 2 plants – HARVEST! 2 courgettes! 🎉
- NO caterpillars this week on the Brussels sprouts plant. New growth and Brussels getting larger.
- 🍏 Apples – Empire – HARVEST! 🎉
- 🍈 Mini Melon ‘Minnesota Midget’ – Growing Larger.
- Sweet Pepper ‘Tangerine Dream’ – HARVEST! 🎉
- 🌶️ Sweet Pepper ‘Napia’ red – HARVEST!
- BlackBerry ‘Loch Ness’ thornless – HARVEST!
Weekend 31st August – 1st September
- Courgette ‘Zephyr’ – HARVEST! 1 courgette !🎉
- Squash ‘Jester F1’ – growing fatter.
- 🍈 Mini Melon ‘Minnesota Midget’ – HARVEST !
- Tomato ‘Orange Cherry’ – HARVEST!
- 🍅 Tomato ‘Cherrola F1’ – HARVEST!
- Sweet Pepper ‘Napia’ red – HARVEST!
- BlackBerry ‘Loch Ness’ thornless – HARVEST!
- Dwarf Raspberry ‘Yummy’ – HARVEST!
