I love Autumn with its leaf colour changing charms and it’s dreamy, cosy time when the blankets and gloves come out as it’s a little bit ‘nippy’ outside.
Our Blueberry plants are giving us a great red leaf autumn display which looks great in the garden.

It’s the first time, in my vegetable growing history, I’ve had such a great Autumn Vegetable harvest.

This years successes include Butternut Squash grown in pots, Baby Bear Pumpkins and Petty Pan yellow baby squashes.
I can see why people grow lots of different varieties and next year I might be one of those people. Pumpkins and Squashes totally have me hooked now!
Baby Bear Pumpkins
I wrote recently about how to grow Baby bear pumpkins and here they are in all their cute glory.

They were picked before the threatened frost last Sunday but their stems were already brown so ready for harvest.
Summer Squash (Petty Pan)

This is the first time I’ve grown petty pan squashes and these yellow beauties have just kept producing all summer long and at the beginning of autumn.
With the next frost they will be done however I’ll keep them in the ground until then, just in case another one or two finish growing.
Autumn Peas
At the beginning of the year, I started a Pea project to see if I could grow peas for most of the year. The results show that you can Yes grow Peas from February to October. As we didn’t quite have a frost on Sunday, so luckily I am still harvesting the peas.

Spring Greens
I am currently growing Spring Cabbages ‘Durham Early’ and some of the lower leaves have dropped down to just above the soil and started to make the netting bulge.
I have harvested these leaves as collards or spring greens as it seems a waste to throw out good greens when they could be on your plate giving great nutrients to your family.
Butternut Squash
I harvested the Butternut Squash which didn’t make the usual butternut shape which was grown in a big deep pot on the patio.

It’s still got green stripes but is mostly beige in colour. This will need a few more weeks on the windowsill to ripen before it is edible.
Spinach
Perpetual Spinach keeps on going and going, it is one of the best garden staples.

I planted this in the summer but all summer long it didn’t grow and was being attached by insects but then the spiders moved into the garden in September and hey presto no more insects! and lots more spinach. Spinach is now growing well since the recent rain.
Kale – Black Magic

The Kale was sown in the greenhouse and planted out in the raised beds under a netted cage at the end of Summer.
Now in Mid October, I’ve started harvesting the Kale leaves. The plant will keep producing leaves all throughout the winter and it is a fantastic way of getting nutritious leafy greens into your diet by just taking them form the garden when required.
