Sow Seeds in January – Onion Seeds

January has low light levels and colder temperatures in the UK as it is the Winter season.

However there is one vegetable that once germinated indoors or in a greenhouse, doesn’t mind growing in the cold until Spring, that’s the Onion.

Ever since growing my whopper size onions last August, I seem to have a new obsession with Onions.

This year I would like to grow Onions from Seed to see how it differs from growing from Sets (baby onions).

Benefits of Seed Sowing Indoors

There are number of benefits to sowing seeds indoors at this time of the year:

  • It can cheer you up from the cold wet Winter,
  • It can remind you of warmer times of Spring growth,
  • It can get you and children excited about seedlings popping up from the soil.

Onions, not your thing? Don’t worry, there’s a few other things you can sow in January here – Seeds To Sow in January Indoors

Onion Seed Sow Along – Sow 10 – 31 January

If you are itching to start sowing, try Onion seeds indoors on a sunny windowsill. As they are cold loving, they will be able to go outside in a greenhouse or cold frame in March to make room for sowing Tomatoes!
