January – Sow, Grow, Harvest Veg

Is it too cold to start Sowing Seeds in January?

There are mixed opinions on whether sowing seeds in January is too early or not, mostly because of low light levels and freezing temperatures.

Some people start warm loving vegetables like aubergines and tomatoes, under grow lights and using a heat mat in January, but I wait until February to sow them indoors on a sunny windowsill,

You can start sowing onions, cauliflower and chilli’s on an indoor windowsill now. Find out what else you can do indoors and outside in the vegetable garden.

Plant Bare Root Fruit Trees

November to January is the perfect time to buy and plant bare root Fruit Trees like Apple & Pear.

Soak the roots in water before digging a hole and planting.

Harvests in January

Romanesco Cauliflower

This vegetable is a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. You won’t see this in the supermarkets but you will see it in Borough Market in London.

Cauliflowers

Now is the time to harvest your autumn and winter vegetables including Cauliflower.

I find Cauliflowers easier to grow overwinter as there are no pests.

Kale

Black Kale can be planted in August and Harvested in October to March.

It is a very nutritious vegetable and easy to grow. It is a striking dark green in the veg garden.

Things to Consider in January

All About Frost

Frost, ice and snow are the freezing and thawing of water.

This can have detrimental effects on plant leaves and delicate tender plants.
