Last week the flower spikes had arrived on our Leeks, really they should have all been harvested by the end of March but as our weather has been a month behind I had left them in the ground and forgotten about them.

When the flower spikes appear on leeks, it means your leeks will get a really tough white core and become woody which for taste means a little more chewy.
We harvested our leeks, washed and chopped them up and froze them straight away in 1 leek per bag for the freezer. I can then add them to recipes when needed.
These leeks were bought small plants planted at the end of August, they have served us well through the winter. We will definitely be growing leeks again.
