When to Sow Tomatoes

Greenhouse Tomatoes – Sow: Late February to Mid March.

Outdoor Tomatoes – Sow: Late March to April.

You will need:

📋 Shopping List

1. Seed cell tray with lid or small pots, (small enough to go on a windowsill). I got mine from Amazon – Yaungel Seed Trays

2. Tomato seeds of your choice. (If you don’t know what variety to choose, see my handy Guide to Tomato Varieties). I got my Tomatoes seeds from MoreVeg.co.uk

3. Small watering can. I got mine from Amazon, it’s actually a child’s watering can.

4. Plant Label and pen.

How to Sow Tomato Seeds – Step by Step

• 1. Fill the cell tray cells with peat free seed compost to the top of the cells.
• 2. Give the compost a little water.
• 3. Open your seed packet and pour out your seeds.
• 4. Place one seed on the compost per cell.
• 5. Cover the seeds with compost.
• 6. Add the lid to the cell tray and open the ventilation holes.
• 7. Place the cell tray on a sunny windowsill.
• 8. Check the compost doesn’t dry out, add a small amount of water when needed. Tomato seeds need wet soil to germinate.

🌱 No of Days to Germinate:

• Your seeds should take 6 to 14 days to germinate at a constant temperature.

🌡️ Temperature required to Germinate:

• 18 to 21 degrees centigrade. This will be an indoor sunny windowsill.

When can I put my Tomato’s in the Un-Heater Greenhouse?

⭐️ This is one of the most popular questions about 🍅 Tomato growing.

❄️ The answer is not until Late April or after your last frost date.

⚠️ If the temperature in your un-heated greenhouse is below 10 degrees, it will affect your tomato and tender seedlings by distressing them which could affect fruiting later on.
