As we are enjoying the vegetable garden in all its glory, I sometimes forget what happens next and miss the time to sow the Autumn and Winter vegetables. Not this year! I’ve decided what I am sowing and here’s my list, I’ll be sowing these seeds at the end of July and in August.
Autumn Carrots

Sow in July and August for autumn and winter carrots. There are certain varieties that do better in late summer heat but can also withstand cold later on in the year. Take a look at your seed packets and see if it says you can still sow in July and August.
Autumn Carrot Varieties include: Autumn King and Autumn King 2 are popular varieties, Katrin and Eskimo F1.
I’ll be sowing – straight into a raised bed – Carrot Sylvano F1 from MoreVeg.Co.Uk
Autumn Cauliflower
From a June or July sowing, you can get a Cauliflower harvest in October or November.
I’ll be sowing: Cauliflower – Bola de Nieve
I’ve not heard of autumn harvesting cauliflower so I thought I’d give this ago. It is a low growing, smaller head variety.
I’ll be sowing into 9cm pots and growing on in the greenhouse before planting outside.
Chinese Cabbage
I’ve always wanted to grow these, they are visually upright bright green cabbages. They are tall and upright. Sow July to August.
I’ll be sowing: Chinese Cabbage – Green Rocket F1
I’ll be sowing into 9cm pots and growing on in the greenhouse before planting outside.
Beetroot

You can still sow Beetroot for a late summer and early autumn harvest. Sow from June to August. Direct into your raised beds.
I’ll be sowing: Beetroot – Pablo F1, these are golf ball size and quick growing for autumn harvest.
Kale

I’ll be sowing: Kale – Black Magic
This is a great vegetable to grow yourself, there are a lot of health benefits for growing this green leafy vegetable. It will also grow right through the winter for picking several leaves when you need them.
How To Sow: Two Seeds per 9cm diameter pot and put in the greenhouse in a tray.
Fennel
I’ll be sowing: Florence Fennel Di Firenze
Pea
I’ll be sowing: Pea – Ambassador
I’m hoping I can get one more pea harvest from an August sowing before the frosts. I’ll be sowing into root trainers and growing on in the greenhouse before planting outside.
Spring Harvested Cabbage
I’ll be sowing: Cabbage Durham
Spring cabbage will be ready in March and April next year from and August sowing.
