The salad, herbs and roots bed is starting to bloom in shades of dark red, lime green, mid green and a mixture of both and it looks even better on your plate at dinner time or in a sandwich for work.

I love this shade of dark red lettuce with its frilly leaves that forms a clump, it’s very striking against the green lettuce.
I don’t like planting my lettuce right next to one another, I like to leave a bit of soil so the plants can move into that space without having to compete with others.
If the plants are close together, I find that the pests can move in like slugs and snails because there is a wet environment to live in under the leaves with no airflow around the plant.
Sit back and have a look at these colourful lettuces. We are also growing spinach, carrots, coriander, parsley and peppers but it hasn’t been warm in enough for them so they are still tiny.

There’s still time to grow lettuce, sow some cut and come gain lettuce leaves today. They even work in the mini greenhouse in a seed tray.
