This year is the first time I have grown Sweetcorn. There has been mixed results and I am disappointed but sometimes that’s the way it goes, you win some, you loose some. The best thing with vegetable growing is that you can always try, try, try again.

I only have two seeds that germinated out of 12 sown and therefore there won’t be enough plants to pollinate one another. I am led to believe that Sweetcorn needs to grow in at least a square block of 6 – 9 plants so that it can be pollinated by the wind.

In the first week of June we sowed some more seeds and this time we put them in the hot house, our shed that gets the sun all day long, it’s like a greenhouse. All 9 seeds germinated and last weekend we pulled the peas out and planted the Sweetcorn into the raised beds.

Sweetcorn has to be planted 45cm apart as they don’t like to be crowded. We have planted them in a block of 9 and I have four spare plants just in case any don’t perform well in the raised beds then I can swap them for a plant in the mini greenhouse.

Fingers crossed we get some Sweetcorn this year.
