July – Vegetable Garden Update – Sweetcorn, Sunflowers, Strawberries, Squash.

The vegetable garden is in full bloom and everything is going well. Due to all the rain we have been having, there has been no need to put the watering system or use the water from the waterbutts, luckily it has all fallen from the sky so far.

Here’s a picture of the vegetable garden at the moment.

Our Vegetable Garden in July

Our Highlights

Sunflowers = Giant

Our sunflowers are well over 6ft tall this year and are working well against the back willow hurdles. They are just coming into flower which is lovely to see the bees back in the garden.

Butternut Squash

We are growing butternut squash this year with our pumpkins, here they are growing in the mini greenhouse, they are almost ready to plant in our raised beds. The onions need to come out of the beds first but we are waiting for the garlic to dry in the shed first.

Garlic Harvest

The garlic has been harvested and has been the whole plant and bulbs have tied together in bunches of 5-8 and put on the back of the shed door on a hook to dry out. They need to be there for 14 days to dry out and then they can be stored in a cool dry place.

Strawberries

We have had a bumper strawberry harvest this year and our strawberries are everbearer plants which mean they will produce some more strawberries before the end of the year.

Sweetcorn

The peas are all finished now, we had loads of peas and we are still eating them. The Sweetcorn plants, all 9 of them are now in next to the Brussels sprouts cage planted in a grid.
