We started sowing two varieties of Pea this year in the middle of March. This is very early however we are trying to get as much out of our vegetable plot this year so are attempting to see if we can get peas out onto the plot and producing by the end of April. As peas are hardy, we hope that we don’t get too severe frosty weather around the beginning of May so we can get a good crop to kick off the growing season.
We have always sown Peas in Root-Trainers, they give a fantastic long thin growing area for the roots of peas. Peas absolutely hate their roots being disturbed when planting out into the soil. Therefore we sow in root trainers and as the roots hold the soil together in the cells.
Is easier to sow in Root-Trainers we find, to plant out with minimal disturbance and the pea gets use to its new soil and surroundings quicker which in turn should give us more peas quicker. It has never failed us so far so we always use this method for peas and beans.
Pea Growing Update – Early April
Our peas, varieties Kelvedon Wonder and Feltham First have germinated and most are growing on well as pea shoots on a sunny windowsill in our conservatory.
Once the peas have reached 5-10cm high and the ground it not frozen, we will plant them around our Bamboo cane wigwams to give us (hopefully) an early crop of peas in May.
