It’s May – What vegetables can I sow & plant?

May is the time for Potting on plants, planting outside and setting up the tomatoes & warm loving fruits in the greenhouse. If you haven’t sown any seeds yet, don’t worry theres plenty to start in the month of May.

Successional Sowings

Lettuce & Spinach

This means sowing seeds over and over again to keep your vegetables or salad veg topped up over the coming months.

Vegetables to Sow in Succession:

  • Lettuce – try different colours & types to keep things interesting.
  • Carrots – Sow a few rows of carrots in different months of the year for example March, May and July to stagger your harvests and avoid the pests.
  • Beetroot – Sow beetroot to fill gaps in your vegetable garden. They don’t like to be sown near leeks, spinach, sweetcorn, tomatoes or potatoes.
  • Spring Onions – if you have not had any success with onions, try sowing Spring Onions directly in the soil. They come in white and red, so mix it up for a surprise harvest.
  • Spinach – There are different types of spinach for different seasons or just grow Perpetual Spinach which lasts all year, just keep harvesting.
  • Peas & Beans – Sow every month or month and a half for a continuous supply all summer.

Autumn Vegetables

You may think it’s a bit early to think about Autumn, we haven’t had Summer yet. However Autumn vegetables like Squash and Pumpkin need at least 5 months to grow, so they need to be sown in May.

From mid May in the UK or World Zone 8-9 , it’s time to sow your Autumn vegetables like pumpkin and squashes. If you are a fan of Winter cabbage, this is also the time to start sowing winter cabbage seeds like savoy or ballhead types.

Last Chance to Sow Tomatoes

If you haven’t sown tomatoes yet, your last chance is to sow at the beginning of May. Sow indoors on a windowsill as the outdoor temperatures may not be high enough to germinate the seeds.

Sow Storing Tomatoes in May

This is a new concept in the UK from SheGrowsVeg. These are Tomatoes that you start later in May and can be stored overwinter by hanging up in a cool, dark dry place. In Europe this is the norm! But it hasn’t caught on in the UK yet.. If you love tomatoes, this could be the way to still be eating them until Christmas!
