Seeds to Sow In January – Summer Cabbage

Summer Cabbage’s are ball head or drum head types of cabbages.

Indoors – You can sow seeds early between End January and February Indoors for an early harvest in May.

Outdoors – Sow seeds in an outdoor raised bed in March and April for harvests from June to September.

Reasons for Growing Summer Cabbage

  1. Coleslaw – Grow your own Coleslaw. Sow carrots & onions by February along with summer cabbage to get homegrown coleslaw harvested in Late May/Early June.
  2. Quick Crop by May – I’m sowing Summer Cabbages early, to harvest small cabbages by Late May. Then I’ll still have time to plant out beans, squash and pumpkins.
  3. Varieties – A wide range of speedy and compact varieties ideal for the home garden or allotment.

What You Will Need to Grow Summer Cabbages – Indoors

  1. A seed cell tray or 9cm pots on a windowsill tray.
  2. Compost
  3. Summer cabbage seeds
  4. Water and plant label.
  5. A bright light windowsill.

What You Will Need to Grow Summer Cabbages – Outdoors

  1. Enviromesh or fine netting – to keep your cabbages protected against frost, pigeons and cabbage white butterflies.
  2. Hoops or aluminium poles for a cage – a structure to put the netting over your plants. You can just skip the hoops and throw the netting over the plants without any support if you are on a budget.
  3. Raised Bed or border or larger container.
