Part 5 – How to Care for your Growing Tomatoes

,

My greenhouse grown tomatoes have been growing strongly although the outdoor grown tomatoes have been sulking a bit with the cold weather in Mid June! Let’s hope we get some sunshine and heat soon to turn these tomatoes red or orange or [insert your colour here].

I am growing:

  • 3 x cherry red ‘Cherrola F1’ tomatoes in my greenhouse in the Hozelock grow bag watering tanks and
  • 3 x cherry orange ‘Orange Cherry’ outside in a raised bed.

Are growing:

  • Tall,
  • Strong,
  • Have the right growing conditions, are not being battered by the wind and are not affected by the cold.
  • Yippee! They are producing flowers and baby tomatoes.

  • Are a bit windswept,
  • Not very tall,
  • Are suffering from the cold weather,

What’s Next? How to Care for your Tomatoes

Pinching out the side shoots

Pinching out the side shoots

If you haven’t already, it may be worth pinching out the side shoots on your branches to stop the plant putting all its energy in growing sideways rather than upwards. No need to cut the stems, just snap them off with your fingers.

As you can see from the Photo above, where the stem meets the branch at a right angle, it’s the little shoot that’s coming out diagonally that you’ll need to remove.

Flowering Tomatoes

If your Tomatoes are in the greenhouse, open the door to allow pollinators like bees, hover flies etc in to pollinate the flowers.

Fruiting Tomatoes

When your Tomatoes start fruiting I.e. when your baby tomatoes start growing, you will need to have some liquid tomato feed ready to boost the plant. At fruiting, tomatoes need a nutrient boost as the plant takes up a lot of nutrients from the compost to form the tomatoes.

There might not be enough nutrients in the compost to form the fruit, so it’s good to give your tomato plants a much needed boost by using liquid feed and mixing it with water, pour on once a week, when the plants start growing baby tomatoes.

Watering your Tomatoes

When your tomatoes are fruiting, make sure you water well so that the tomatoes swell.

I’m growing my tomatoes in the greenhouse in the Hozelock Growbag Waterer as I did last year with larger Italian tomatoes. The Growbag Waterer is definitely more successful with cherry tomatoes this year.
