How to Plant Courgettes in a Raised Bed with Video

I’m excited to grow another Ball courgette this year, called ‘Summer Holiday F1’. It’s a yellow stripy variety which should make a bright statement in the vegetable garden.

My Courgettes are ready to be planted outside. However this week (10th – 14th June) the British weather has gone cool, with temperatures dipping overnight.

A word of warning: Courgettes don’t like cold and they don’t like the wet. So only plant them outside when it’s warmer than 10 degrees during the day and night.

Courgette ‘Summer Holiday F1’

  • Sown on 27 April,
  • Germinated 7 May,
  • Potted on into large pots on 21 May.
  • Ready to a plant outside – on 2 June, they are now ready to plant out into a raised bed.

Your Courgette Plant should be this size to plant outside:

You will Need:

  • A courgette plant or two.

Step by Step Instructions

1. Dig a hole the size of the pot in your raised bed soil.

2. My pot has two plants in it so they have to be separated using your fingers split the root ball in two.

3. Plant one of the plants in the hole. You can add compost to the hole to give the plant a boost in the cooler weather.

4. Pull the soil back into the hole around the courgette and form it down in the soil.

5. Dig another hole to put your second courgette in, if you have one.

6. Courgettes depending on variety, should be planted 90cm apart however I don’t have that much room so mine are being planted about 60cm apart.

Close planting means you may need to cut off some leaves that clash and the plants may try and extract the same nutrients from the soil. Add extra compost to the top of the soil like a mulch of you see yellow leaves.

7. Water well at the soil level.
