Mini Melons – Part 3 – It’s Time to Pot on your Seedlings with Video

, ,

I’m growing a Mini Melon variety called Minnesota Midget which is a Cantaloupe orange flesh mini melon. It’s my first time growing Mini melons in my greenhouse this Summer and I am excited to see what they will look and taste like.

Early June is the time to pot on your Mini Melons (from an early May sowing) to a larger pot so they have a chance to grow bigger & stronger before being planted into its final larger pot in the greenhouse with support.

My Mini Melons were:

  • Sowed on 11 May,
  • Germinated on 18 May,
  • Potted on 2 June.

  • 1. Scoop the compost into the larger pot, about two thirds of the pot should be full of compost.
  • 2. With your hands make a hole in the middle, by flattening the compost, about the same size as your small pot.
  • 3. Take the small pot off your seedling to expose the root ball.
  • 4. Gently tease the roots free and put the mini melon plant into the hole in the larger pot.
  • 5. Put compost around the plant and firm down the compost to keep the plant upright.
  • 6. Add your plant label.
  • 7. Water your new plant well.
  • 8. Place your new seeding in a larger pot in the greenhouse to grow on.
