Pest – Pigeons attacking Peas

,

I am new to this problem but Pigeons are attacking my Peas!

A Wood Pigeons favourite vegetables are Peas, brassica family like cabbage leaves and broccoli leaves.

Wood Pigeon

They also like berries, currants and strawberries.

Chewed Pea Pods – Pigeon damage

Signs that Pigeons are attacking your Plants

  • Bits of stem and leaves pulled off the plant that are on the ground,
  • Pea pods chewed,
  • Stems broken,
  • Plant is flat,
  • Leaves chewed.
Stems chewed – Pigeon damage

Solutions – How do I stop the Pigeons eating my Pea plants?

  • Netting, will stop their beaks pulling your plants to shreds.
  • Cage with netting – an enclosed area with netting to completely cover the fruit and/or vegetables.
  • Onions or Garlic – Pigeons do not like onions or garlic. I’ve put my pot of Peas next to my pot of Onions.
  • A tight space like a corner with place they cannot sit on. I’ve moved my pot into the corner next to our fence near another pot of onions. Pigeons will not be able to manoeuvre to get at the stems.
  • Distraction or something that moves – a child’s windmill is something that goes round with the wind is sometimes enough to scare off a pigeon.
  • Bird of Prey model, pigeons are scared of larger birds in the garden, so get a bird scarer in the form of a bird of prey model.
