Step by Step – Planting Leeks

1. Using the tape measure or ruler, measure a 6 inch length from the end of the stick upwards.

2. With the pen, mark a line at the 6 inch length on the stick.

3. Leeks should be planted approx 10 cm apart so mark out where the holes for the Leeks are going to be by putting small indents into the soil.

Count your plants to find the number of holes to make with your stick.

4. Push the stick into the ground until the line is level with the surface of the soil on the indents marked out on step 3.

Wiggle the stick in a circular motion to make the hole a little big bigger. Do this for all the holes.

5. Gently loosen the soil around the roots of the Leek plants and put the Leek plant into the hole.

Try not to disturb the soil in the hole. Put all your Leek plants into the holes in the soil.

6. Backfill the holes with water. Pour your water into the holes until the water comes up the holes to the top.

This is called ‘puddling’. Water all your leeks in their holes.

7. If planting in a dry period, you may need water again by using the puddling method a week later.

8. Your Leeks will take a while to fatten up and over time, the soil will naturally fall in around the leeks.
