What are Garlic Scapes? and is my Garlic Flowering?

This week my garlic looks like it has a flower spike coming up through the middle. If your garlic or onions are doing this, don’t worry and don’t be tempted to pull them up yet. These are what’s called Garlic Scapes.

The garlic is not ready yet and when a garlic scape appears it is often an indication that you have another 4 – 5 weeks left before harvesting.

Snip off the Garlic scape

When you see the flower spikes or garlic scapes on your garlic, snip the stem with scissors near the top leaves. Then the garlic will now make the bulbs in the ground.

Don’t forget to eat the scapes

There’s no waste in the vegetable garden, garlic scapes get chopped up and used like garlic, they have a mild garlic taste. They can be stored in the fridge.
