The Great Garlic Grow Off

If you cannot think of anything else to grow in October, November or December, then make sure you grow Garlic.

It’s one of the easiest things to grow, a great place to start for beginners and there’s plenty of varieties to choose from, even if you’ve been growing it for a few years already.

This year I can see a few growers already on Instagram so I thought we could all have a Great Garlic Grow Off (a spin on the Great British Bake Off on Channel 4) and I’ll report back on my Garlic, growing along with other growers on Instagram.

Why is Garlic so Easy to Grow?

  1. No extras needed – no netting, no fleece, no fuss, no worries. Garlic is cold hardy, it is said to love the frost, it’s great for the cloves.
  2. You’ve got 3 months to plant it – so if you are like me, quite busy with children, husband and a 9-5 job, you may forget to plant it. But don’t worry because in the UK, you can plant between October and December for the largest bulbs. January to March for smaller bulbs.
  3. No Maintenance – It is one of the best vegetables to ‘drop in a hole, cover with soil and leave it’ with no maintenance required. The watering will mainly be sorted by winter rains & no weeding is required until Spring.
  4. It grows through the Seasons minding its own business – whilst you are indoors dealing with Halloween, Christmas, New Year and Spring, it hunkers down, cloves get larger, leaves get thicker whilst nothing else, is really growing apart from Onions (get those in too!) and Brassica’s.
  5. Garlic is Ready in Late May to Late July – Just when you are thinking where am I going to put my beans, courgettes, sweetcorn or pumpkins, the Garlic is ready to be harvested and leaves space for your Summer crops.
