Cold Loving Vegetables

Very Early Peas

I love Peas but last year the pigeons chewed and spat out my peas which were located in a pot.

This year I’m fighting back, I’ll be putting the peas back into a Raised Bed and constructing a Pea Wall – on a Budget. I’ve also got an idea of how to frighten the pigeons away as well.

Two years ago, I did an experiment on whether you can grow Peas all year round outdoors and found that you can, almost. I started sowing in February and harvested Peas up until November.

I started sowing in February with a very early pea variety called Oskar and this year I’m growing the popular overwintering variety Douce Provence. Then I’ll be moving on to variety ‘Telegraph’ which is quite tall at 1.8 meters and is a similar to ‘Alderman’. This year I’ll be growing taller varieties to get the maximum harvest of peas from a small vertical space.

Broad Beans

Last year my trial of a Broad Bean variety called Elenora was successful as this variety withstood in windy gardens.

I’d like to grow the crimson red variety this year.

Cucumbers

I’ll be growing a mini Cucumber variety called Mini Munch F1 this year. Last year I tried an alternative mini variety but it had spines on the cucumbers as they got larger and I didn’t like this.
