If Chrysanthemums and peonies are the Flowers of November then Garlic and Onions should be the Vegetables of November.

Here’s the Top things to plant in November:

Shallots, Onion & Garlic

Shallots, Onions and Garlic should really be planted this month. The ground will be frozen soon so plant your bulbs before then.

If it’s too wet for onions or shallots, plant them in cell trays and plant out in the new year.

This is a new trick that seems to work for me – Planting Onions from Sets in Cell Trays.

I’m Planting Shallots & Garlic

This year I’ve planted my Shallots ‘Longor’ in cell trays in the unheated greenhouse.

I’ve also planted my Garlic ‘Messidrome’ and Elephant Garlic in a raised bed.

Overwintering Peas and Broad Beans

October or November sees the start of the overwintering 🫛 peas and 🫘 broad beans season. You can sow an overwintering type or pea and broad bean into the soil outside now.

Overwintering Variety Types are:

• Very Hardy to cope with cold temperatures,
• Slow growing overwinter and grows in Spring,
• Popular Pea varieties ‘Douce de Provence’ and Broad Beans ‘Aquadulce’ are the overwintering types.

3 Points to Consider before Growing Overwintering Peas or Broad Beans

1. If your soil is too wet, the peas and bean plants will rot,
2. You might need to cover your peas and beans with netting due to pigeons,
3. The peas and beans may only be a month ahead of a Spring Sowing.

Bare Root Fruit Trees

November to January is the best time to buy a bare root fruit tree as they are in their dormancy period.

Buying a Bare Root Miniature Fruit Tree can:

• Save you money – this is the cheapest way to buy a tree,
• Plant it where you want it (pot or in the ground),
• Quicker to establish approx 1 year before fruiting,
• Ideal for small gardens and can be planted 1 meter apart.

If you want a small columnar tree which doesn’t get much taller than 1.5 meters then check your tree is grafted to a Dwarf Rootstock.

👉 Top Tip – If you can wait until January, Supermarkets and Discount stores like B&M have bare root fruit trees for approx £5-10 as they try to get rid of their stock before the end of the planting season.
