A month has flown by and here’s the update, plants have green growth, merged into the gaps and weeds have sprouted. Let’s find out how things are going with the Brussels, Cauliflower and Kale plants.
Why are Brassica’s Challenging to Grow?
- Brassicas have a number of pests and diseases including the not popular Cabbage White Butterfly and caterpillars. I prefer growing them in the Autumn & Winter as there are fewer pests, no caterpillars but might be a few slugs.
- Brassicas are hungry feeders and require a good 2 to 3 inches of compost to grow in.
- Brassicas also need good spacing and the leaves should not touch the side of the netting.
- Brassicas are not as popular as Tomatoes or Pumpkins.
- Brassicas including cabbage take a long time to grow.
- Brassicas require a little bit more maintenance, weeding and dead leaf removal than growing other vegetables.

Pests: caterpillars picked off.
Planted outside the ground in Raised Beds under Cage & netting.
Sowed Spring Cabbage.
1 Month in the Ground, growing well.
Sown Spring Cabbage potted on to larger pot.
