How to Plant Onion Sets in the Ground (grown in Cell Trays)

,

My Onion sets were planted in cell trays in the second week of March. One month later, in Mid April, they are now ready to be planted out in a raised beds.

See my article: 🧅 How to Start Growing Onions in wet weather in Cell trays + Video.

Planting Onion Sets into a Raised Bed

This year in Mid April, the temperature is about 11 degrees centigrade during the day and still cold at night down to 2 degrees centigrade on some nights.

The weather isn’t warming up until May, but at least it’s dry, so the onions won’t rot in the ground.

Onions don’t mind the cold, although when planted out they may sulk for a week or two whilst they put down more roots into the new ground. One thing Onions do hate is having their roots in constant wet ground.

How to Plant out Onion Sets in Raised Beds

🌱 Plant in Cell Trays in un-heated Greenhouse: March,

Plant out in Raised Bed: April,

🧅 Harvest: July and August.

🗓️ It takes approx 100 days to grow onions from planting. A quick check on Google search for: ‘100 days after (date you planted them) in my case 14 April 2024’ it says I will need to harvest on 23 July 2024.

Step by Step Guide to Planting Onions Sets with Carrots

You will need your tray of Onion Sets in cell trays and a trowel. Also you will need a pack of Carrot seeds if you are sowing carrots with onions.

  • 1. Remove the Onions (with roots attached in the compost block) from your cell trays,
  • 2. Lay the Onions out on top of the soil on your Raised Bed, so you know where you are planting them. It should be about 4-6 inches apart from one another.

  • 3. If you are interested inter-sowing carrots to prevent carrots root fly, then draw some shallow tramlines in the soil with a bamboo cane so you can sow the carrot seeds in rows in between or in the middle of your onions.
  • 4. Dig a small hole and place the Onion root block into the hole. The key here is not to bury the onion underground. The soil around the onion should be loose.
  • 5. Repeat steps 1 to 3, planting all your onions.
  • 6. Open your Carrot seeds packet, I’m sowing Marion F1 Carrot variety. It is a Nantes sweet tasting type, good for growing all year round.
  • 7. Pour the carrot seeds into your hand and sprinkle the seeds up and down the shallow tramlines already made earlier in the raised bed soil.
  • 8. Move soil or compost over the seeds to cover them and water the carrot seeds and onion sets well.
