Grow Veg Challenge – Grow your Own Coleslaw

One of my Projects this year is to Grow my Own Coleslaw. This is quite an interesting project as there are three vegetables I need to be able to harvest at the same time in order to achieve making the coleslaw in July or August.

What is Coleslaw?

Coleslaw or Slaw in the UK is shredded raw cabbage (red or white or both) with a dressing like mayonnaise or plain yogurt.

Over time Coleslaw has evolved to contain other shredded raw vegetables, the most well known coleslaw is usually cabbage, carrot and onion. It can also contain red pepper, grated cheese, apple, bacon or even pickles.

There are variations to coleslaw all over the world like Krautsalat (cabbage salad) in Germany where it is mixed with oil and vinegar.

In Poland, Chinese cabbage is used in coleslaw, with red cabbage, onions, carrots, parsley and dill with oil and vinegar.

In America, coleslaw contains buttermilk or mayonnaise but mustard can be added too.

Grow Your Own Coleslaw – Vegetable Seeds Required:

  • White or Red Cabbage or Chinese Cabbage,
  • Carrots,
  • Onions – Spring onions or onion sets,
  • Chives (optional).

Red Cabbage or White Cabbage

Sow: 2nd week in April in modules in the un-heated greenhouse.

Onion Sets

  • Buy from the Garden Centre in February or March.
  • I have grown the Onion Sets on in cell trays on 9 March as it was too wet to plant outside. See ‘Growing Onions in cell trays’.
  • I’m planting my onions out in a raised bed in the 2nd week in April.
Onion sets in trays ready to be planted out

Spring Onions

Sow: 2nd week of April (or anytime in April)

Carrots

Sow: 2nd week in April (or anytime in April).

⭐️ Top Tip: Sow Carrots next to Onions or Spring Onions to deter the pest – Carrot Fly who doesn’t like the smell of onions.
