We are so excited as we haven’t grown Pumpkins before and we have always wanted to grow our own pumpkins in time for Halloween.
We are sowing variety: Jack O Lantern – This variety is a perfect size for carving lanterns with soft orange flesh.
Sow: May to June
Harvest: September to October
Top Tips for Growing Pumpkins
- When you put the seed into the soil, put it on its end. Because the seed is flat, it needs to be put on its end so it finds its way to the surface of the soil.
- Pumpkins are ready approximately 4 months after sowing your seeds, so line this up with a harvest before Halloween.
- They need lots of room to spread their vine, plant at least 1 metre apart.
- Pumpkins are relatively low maintenance once planted, just keep going with the watering, sunshine and sheltered from winds.
- Watch out for Slugs and snails which hide under the pumpkin leaves in the moist conditions which they love. You don’t want them munching your leaves.
- Ripen pumpkins off the vine for at least two weeks before storing them in a cool and dry place.
