By now in April, Leeks should have fattened up enough to start harvesting. Ours seem a little behind on the fattening up stage so we have left them in the garden and added some multipurpose compost mulch around the top of the stems in March to give them a bit of a nutrients boost.

We have however pulled up the skinny leeks also know as spring onions looking at the size of them and use them in the kitchen in a number of ways.
My favourite way of quickly using the Leeks is an open puff pastry tart recipe from Justrol called broccoli, cheese and onion puff slice. I love the taste that the wholegrain mustard gives as a base to the pastry and it’s a quick, easy and cheap recipe. I use the leeks in place of the onions. We find it a delicious and quick to make weekday meal.
It’s the first time we have grown Leeks and these were from plants put in the plot last August. This variety is called Musselburgh. We will continue to harvest the leeks throughout April.
