Tomatoes

All About Tomatoes

Bright, little or big balls of sweetness or acidity.
Ready to harvest in 2 to 3.5 months.

The UK’s favourite vegetable (technically a fruit) to grow.

How to Grow Tomatoes

Sow Seeds: Mid March to Late May (UK).

Sow Seeds – Where? In cell trays or small pots on an indoor sunny windowsill. Pot into 9cm pots after 6 weeks and keep indoors on the windowsill.

Move to Greenhouse: After last frost date, Tomatoes are tender vegetables and frost can affect their stems & leaves.

Grow in Pots Outside: Plant in final containers outdoors after last frost date with cane support & watering.

Maintenance: Tomatoes need lots of water so you may need an automatic watering system or a container with a reservoir at the bottom to be able to top up water.

Harvest Tomatoes: July to September.

5 Top Tips for Growing Tomatoes

  • 1. Don’t start too early in February otherwise you’ll have no-where to put the plants indoors until April when they can go in the greenhouse. Check your last frost date first.
  • 2. Leggy Seedlings? Don’t worry, if your Tomatoes have long stems, pot them on deeper into the compost and they will survive. See how to fix leggy seedlings here.
  • 3. Water, Water & More Water – Aubergines need consistent watering. It’s best to setup an automatic watering system to keep on top of the watering.
  • 4. Tomato Leaves can cause irritation – Tomatoes are part of the Nightshade family and have prickly leaves which may cause irritation if not wearing gloves to move the plants.
  • 5. Tomatoes are nutrient hungry – Make sure you have some Tomato feed ready to give the plants a boost when they start flowering. This will boost the fruits and harvest.
