Vegetables & Fruit to Plant in November
November is the time for bonfire night, colder nights, frost and even snow.
Some say the garden is closed until the new year, but there are a few things to sow and plant now that would get a head start for the new years growing.
If you haven’t planted onion sets or garlic, there’s still time to plant them this month or in December.
If you are interested in introducing fruit to your garden amongst the vegetables, it’s very easy to look after dwarf or columnar fruit trees. Now’s the time to get them in the ground as a cheaper bare root trees.

Sowing in the Greenhouse

Sow Winter Lettuce
Sow winter lettuce in November for leaves throughout the winter. I sow my lettuce seeds in a trough in the greenhouse and place in a sunny position.

Sow Coriander
I cannot get enough of the herb Coriander, I use it in meat and vegetable curries. I accidentally let it go to seed in the summer, so when I realised I could grow it overwinter, I jumped at the chance.

Sow Corn Salad
Deliciously round rosettes of leaves otherwise known as Corn Salad or Lambs Lettuce. It has a slightly nutty flavour but great for adding to sandwiches, salads, or as a garnish. I’m sowing mine in a trough in the greenhouse with the lettuce.
Planting in November

Planting Garlic
Garlic is a really easy vegetable to grow, it is also cold hardy and loves the frost. It is easy to leave and grow overwinter for bulbs to harvest in late June/July.

Plant Autumn Onion Sets
Onions from sets can be grown in autumn or spring. If your soil is too wet, start them off in cell trays and plant out later.

Have you tried Growing Elephant Garlic?
Elephant garlic is larger than normal garlic and can be planted with other garlic.
Jobs To Do in November

Pruning Columnar Trees
When your apple & pear trees are dormant, start pruning columnar trees to maintain their shape for spring growth.

Clearing Leaves & Making Leaf Mold
Collect all the dead leaves and put them in a large pot, bag or mesh bin. Add water every month or so, eventually after 3 years the leaves break down into an earthy rich leaf matter containing nutrients.

Finding homes for Ladybirds
Ladybirds are looking for places to huddle together and hibernate. This could be on leaves, trees, fences, sheds. Give them a helping hand by building a log pile or putting up a ladybird house.
The November Veg Garden

Garlic is in!
Garlic has been planted on 1st November this year. I’ve chosen a Spanish Hardneck Variety called Morado. It is great for cooler climates so I’m banking on a cold winter. It also has a bold flavour.

Self Seeded Spinach Harp F1
In the Spring, my Winter spinach bolted in the first sunny March day. I left it to go to seed and then shook it on the soil. 6 months later, the seeds have activated and I have an abundance of spinach!

Surprise Peas!
A few rows of Peas were sown at the end of summer for a last crop. However I don’t get much success with direct sown peas… until now, a little surprise when I was clearing out the beans. 1 pea plant with pods, what a surprise!
Veg Harvests in November

Parsnips
Parsnips are one of the longest growing vegetables in the ground. They are luckily worth the wait for harvest in November or for Christmas dinner.

Harvest a Leek with Me
Sown in March, approx 7 months later, Leeks are ready to be harvested. But how exactly do I get it out of the ground…? Check out my video to show you how.

Peas from a late summer sowing
Harvest summer peas before the frost comes. Replace them by sowing overwintering peas now.
