August – Sow, Grow, Harvest Veg

Vegetable Seeds to Sow in August

August is the last time to Sow Carrots and Beetroot for the winter. Whilst the temperature and light levels are higher, sow now another crop of lettuce, spinach, radish, peas, chard, carrots and beetroot to see you through the autumn and winter.

It’s also time to bring the last of the summer veg and fruit harvests indoors to make sauces, soups, preserves and batch freeze the rest to last through autumn and winter.

Sowing in Raised Beds & Pots

Sow Spring Cabbage

Towards the end of August, sow Spring Cabbage in small or direct into large pots in the greenhouse. These will be ready to harvest in April.

Sow a final crop of Peas

Sow a final crop of peas, choose a pea with the height of 45cm to 65cm so they have chance to grow before the colder temperatures come in October.

Sow Lettuce & Spinach

Sow Lettuce & Spinach, this is your final chance to sow summer varieties. After this month you’ll need to sow the hardier varieties that can cope with winter.

Planting in August

Sweetcorn Plants are go!

If you want new potatoes at Christmas, plant 1st early potato tubers in July for a harvest in October to November. These are best in large containers.

Winter Squash plant is go!

Back in 2021 I grew a monster squash for the first time, now in 2025 I’m trying again, a little late in the season from a plug plant. Let’s see how it goes.

Raised Bed Preparation for Autumn

It’s time to strip out the old dead plants and prepare your raised beds and pots for winter growing. Add compost, mulch etc

Jobs To Do in August

Harvest, Harvest, Harvest

August is the month for harvests, harvest your plants and keep harvesting until the plant dies back. The heat and light will drop off towards September.

Plan for Autumn & Winter

Last year I tried growing Brassicas – Cauliflower, kale, Brussels and spring cabbage through the winter and the conclusion was it was the best time to grow them due to lack of pests!

How to Cook all your Harvests

Keep harvesting your veg so you get some more. Once the veg or fruit is picked, the plant starts making more energy to concentrate on the next harvests.

The Veg Garden in August

3 Pumpkins Ready to Harvest

So this year it’s an early Pumpkin harvest at the end of August! You’ll be needing to know when to harvest and how to keep them in storage until Halloween.

Peas Harvest & Sow some more

Peas have been harvested and this time some even made it to the kitchen due to the bumper crop.

Mini Melons – Watermelons Update

Find out how big your mini melons need to be and what are the signs they are ready to harvest.

Summer Crookneck Squash

I tried growing Petty Pans a few years ago and got the Summer Squash bug! This year I tried a crookneck squash. Its great to add with courgettes for a veg curry.

Sweet Peppers ripening to Red

The sweet peppers I grew this year were snack size but I think I prefer the longer varieties. They have taken a while but are slowly turning red now.

Onions Harvest

Onions are ready to harvest when the leaves lay flat on the ground. Find out how to dry and store them to prevent rotting.

Harvests in August

Aubergine

My very first Aubergine this year! I was a little nervous on growing it as it said it was difficult to grow. It was in fact easy! From one plant I got 7 aubergines, value for money indeed!

Courgettes

It’s been a bumper year for courgettes, and I couldn’t keep up with the harvests and eating them, some turn into marrows! This year I went back to the traditional long shaped courgettes.

Summer Squash

The first courgette has arrived!

You’ll only have to blink and you’ll miss the rest, so keep checking your plants and harvest courgettes.

More Harvests

Tomatoes

I grew a bush variety this year and they have sprawled all over the greenhouse but have produced bumper crops of cherry tomatoes. Although they have been over ripe but with the sweetest taste.

Mini Cucumbers

I’m back to growing Mini Munch cucumbers this year, they are the best croppers, we have had loads from 3 plants. This is a little too much but my daughter loves them!

Blackberries

Our BlackBerry bush / vine has gone crackers this year with a bumper crop! We have had to fight the wasps for a harvest but there’s enough for both of us really.

Pests & Diseases in August

Powdery Mildew

Powdery Mildew is a fungal disease on Courgettes, Pumpkin and Squash plants. It is airborne and spread by water so it hard to fix. Find out how to treat this and other leaf diseases that occur in August.

Blossom End Rot

If there has been inconsistent watering the bottom of the tomato can show signs of rot.

Don’t worry as usually not all the tomatoes will be like this on the plant.

Caterpillars on Brassicas

Cabbage white butterflies will be causing chaos laying bright yellow eggs on the undersides of leaves.

Then you’ll have problems as they hatch into hungry caterpillars.
